Ready… Set… Go! Transition Strategies for Caregivers

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Dr. Charles Sophy A Thoughtful Plan Can Diffuse the Power Struggle Does the thought of asking your child to move on to their next activity unnerve you? Picture this: Your child comes home from school and heads straight for the playroom, excited to spend some time with their new Star Wars action figures or Barbie Doll. They play for an hour; you can hear their squeals of delight from the kitchen as youre preparing dinner. And then, the moment you dread its time to call your child to dinner. The battle begins. You call once, no reply. You call again only to be greeted with In a minute, Mom! and then Just a sec or worse, an exasperated Okay Im coming! and no hungry child appearing at the table. As the food grows cold, your internal temperature rises until you swear you could reheat the soup just by sticking your finger in it and still no hungry child at the table. In childcare, transition times are when you are trying to help children finish an activity or daily routine and move on to another one. During free play, children will often be very engaged in their chosen activity and they will find it difficult to abruptly stop what they are doing. The same holds true for any favorite activity playing the piano, talking on the phone with friends or even listening to the new Green Day CD. Transitioning from one activity to another is often a difficult time in child care settings. But theres no reason to throw in the towel and admit defeat. Transitions can be transformed into positive experiences by a solid upfront plan. Preparation is your best friend in engaging your child in transition activities. Transitional activities can be positive and exciting ways of moving children from one activity to another. They can make finishing one activity and moving on to another activity a learning experience and an adventure. Lets look at our free play example and incorporate a simple technique to smooth your childs transition from playtime to dinner time. You may find it helpful to give them a warning that playtime will soon be over. Instead of calling out “five more minutes, ensure your child has heard you by going directly to them and saying You have time for one more checkers game. Dinner is in five minutes. The warning serves two purposes: 1. It clearly sets a plan for your child to follow (only one more game) and 2. It shifts your childs focus from the current activity to the new one. Some children may take longer to stop one activity and move on to the next. Even with fair warning, many children will be reluctant to stop playing in favor of doing homework, having dinner, or taking a bath. If your child is unable to switch gears quickly, it is helpful to give this type of child ten-minute, five-minute and one-minute warnings before a change. This allows them to gradually prepare for the shift. Transition times and activities differ from child to child and even activity to activity. You may find that your child transitions quickly from playtime to a pizza dinner but drags their feet when transitioning from t.v. time to bed time. Knowledge from your childs past transitions and understanding of your child and their feelings is the foundation on which to build your transition strategy. Some of the following may raise your insights towards transition: 1. How is my child behaving/feeling? Anxiety: For some children, change (even simple change) is often difficult. Ease the childs anxiety, and resistance to change diminishes significantly. Anger: Leaving an enjoyable activity for a less enjoyable activity often results in anger in the child. Setting a time to resume the enjoyable activity or devising creative transition activities (a song or role playing) can help diffuse the childs tension. Control: When parents understand the temperament of their children, its easier to control the transition process. Transition activities for a 2 year old differ greatly from those of a 12 year old. Keep your childs temperament and age in mind when planning transition strategies. 2. How are these behaviors/feelings addressed? Identification: Mindful observation of your childs positive and negative transitions can yield important clues to help smooth future transitions. Minimize impacts: Timely and calming approaches to transitions create a sense of routine and security for your child. Model healthy patterns of transition: Children emulate the people they love. Sometimes teaching your child healthy transition behaviors is as simple as modeling them yourself. 3. How do you sustain good behaviors? Awareness: Build upon your childs strengths and successful transitions. Support: Recognize your childs weaknesses and alter your strategy in dealing with them. Remember: Always try to think about your plan to transition before you begin the dialog. Does the Arranged Marriage Work?

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Uma Shankari You marry someone your parents arranged for you! How do you marry someone you dont know? Can it really work?” the American woman asked. She taught me editing and international reporting at the J school in Bangalore. Ms.Susan Postlewaite, I’m addressing this to you. The arranged marriages in India have evolved over the years and come in many shades. At one end of the spectrum we have marriages where parents force their decision, sometimes through tactical emotional pressure, without bothering to ask their children’s opinion. At the other end, we have the liberal ones where the family is used merely as a networking resource for dating. In recent years Indian matchmaking has gone high-tech, and a number of marital websites have sprouted across the internet like Shaadi.com, Rishta.com, JeevanSaathi.com, IndianMatrimonials.com, BharatMatrimony.com and IndianDating.com. Your question now. Yes, the arranged marriage can work. And the success rates? Quite high. No, I won’t base the conclusion on the lower divorce rates in India. Because they do not tell the entire story - the story of increasing violence against women - educated and uneducated - who stick it out in a loveless marriage and brave the cruelties for the sake of children, having nowhere to go in a society which accepts the male domination as a natural order of things. Besides there are minefields specific to many Indian marriages, such as how to live in joint families and manage the expectations of not only the spouse, but the in-laws as well. Instead I would focus on the proof-of-concept of arranged marriages and its dynamics in the present day India where the new breed of MBA-educated women are no longer prepared to be docile wives, yet they give the green signal to their parents to look for a potential partner. In most progressive families the parents decide who gets through the initial vetting, but the final decision is the couples. Some parents make material demands in the spousal search for their children who might consider such factors irrelevant and robbing the mystery and allure of the marriage. But many parents are cool “I’m happy if you are happy” so they do their bit, and the time-strapped children are happy to be relieved of the tedium. One is not allowed to take the time it takes to get to know someone, but has to decide on a deadline. The couple get married based on practical reasons, and work on building affection later. They look beyond trivial issues and get to know one another at first on a practical level alone - like education, career, and attitude - and try not to be too judgemental. So now, why does that work? May be it is culture, tradition or whatever; once you’re married, the society puts pressure to keep it working. One doesn’t jump out the first available exit point at the sign of a firework. Everybody, including the family and friends, works at dousing the fire. In the movie Fiddler on the Roof, based on the life in the early twentieth century in the Russian village of Anatevka, Tevye, the milkman, asks his wife Golde if she loved him. And she replies Do I love you? For twenty-five years I’ve washed your clothes Cooked your meals, cleaned your house Given you children, milked the cow After twenty-five years, why talk about love right now? But Tevye insists; and Golde says, “I suppose I do” and together they sing It doesn’t change a thing But even so After twenty-five years It’s nice to know So they didn’t call it love; but nevertheless love followed years of committed companionship as automatically as a shadow. Dr Howard J. Markman, from the University of Denver, and co-author of Fighting For Your Marriage believes that the western culture puts a premium on the capriciousness of love. Markman says that most marriages fail because we enter relationships with poor communication skills and unrealistic expectations. There’s a science to staying in love; at the heart of love is intimacy and friendship, not passion and drama. Too many people believe in the myth that passion provides us with the fuel to get through life together. Robert Epstein, who is editor-in-chief of Psychology Today and a research professor at the California School of Professional Psychology, declares that love is anything but blind. He believes that instead of simply waiting for Mr. or Mrs. Right to come into our lives, we can “make a conscious, serious and sustained effort” to trust, communicate, resolve mutual conflicts, and love somebody with whom we share some attraction and a basic compatibility. That’s arranged marriage for you, Susan. Uma Shankari is a Bangalore-based freelance writer, passionate about writing on development issues. These people face difficulty in getting the money in form of loan because they have nothing to offer to the lender as security for the loan amount. Personal tenant loans can be the perfect support you are looking for your personal needs. The term Personal Tenant Loans can be defined as the synonym for personal unsecured loans. These loans are basically for the people without an option to offer their property as collateral. These may include student, tenants, PGs, people living with their parents etc. You can apply for amounts ranging between ₤1000 to ₤25000 for a repayment period from 6 months to few years depending upon the amount taken and lenders policy. Being an unsecured loan these loans comes at slightly higher rate of interest than secured loans. But there is no stress and anxiety which may be surrounding you due to fear of loosing your property as collateral. Absence of process of valuation of collateral saves time hence faster approvals. Loan amount can be used for any purpose such as debt consolidation, wedding or health expenses, for property buying or home improvement or your business loans. These loans also help you clean up your credit history as when you make timely payment of installments it adds positively to your credit score. But for this you need to consider the fact that you should borrow only that much of amount which you can repay afterwards or it will damage your credit record. Normally you can get about 70 to 75% of your annual income. There is an online option to apply for such loans which is considered as the fastest, easiest and most reliable form of getting a loan. With the help of online tools such as loan calculators, repayment calculators, comparison tools you can easily find out the loan package of your requirement. The online form is also very simple to fill. You are required to fill details such as your name, address and contact information, amount of loan you are applying for and your credit score. Lose Weight-Gain Optimal Health By Limiting Cooked Foods

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Beth Hansel Diets, workouts, nutritional supplements, websites, books and ebooks, magazines and ezines, DVDs, gyms and health food stores. They’re everywhere! It’s a multi-billion-dollar industry. We all want to feel and look great. You try this and try that but somehow end up where you started. Fortunately, the answer may be simply about education and choices. Some say cooked food is all bad. However, cooked food has had its place in our diets since the discovery of fire. I love cooked food. But the reality is that cooked food is not good for us. When food is cooked at temperatures above 116 degrees the enzymes are killed. Enzymes are extremely important to good health. Without them there is no life. Our bodies can make the enzymes necessary for digestion but the problem is that when you eat a diet of mostly cooked food, your body is so busy trying to make new enzymes to digest all that cooked food, the body gets over stressed and is not able to keep up with the work load. Then we get sick. Take a look at the raw gurus. They all look fantastic! There’s something to be said about that kind of evidence. If you are like me, a LOVER of cooked food (especially hot wings and beer) then this is not what you want to hear. I didn’t. I’m still not ready to be 100% raw. I don’t believe you have to go 100% raw to see major changes in your body. 80-90% raw diets are very healthy and full of good nutrition. The thing is that what I have learned about food is the old saying “you are what you eat”. My goal is to work up to a 90% raw diet that I can live on forever. Then work up to 100%. A diet consisting of 80-90% low fat fresh fruits and vegetables WILL result in a desirable weight. It’s the law of the body. They are low calorie, low fat and it takes your body more calories to digest it so you are actually in a profit situation which means you will not gain weight. You can eat as much fruits and vegetables as you want! One way to get your fruits and veggies every day is to put your daily ration of fruits and veggies in a plastic bin as your must eat daily food. You’d be amazed how much food you are actually supposed to eat every day. One problem that people run into during their quest for optimum health is screwing up their metabolism. They crash diet. Then they try just eating meat. Then diet pills. Then powders and shakes. The body gets confused. Many people make the same mistakes where you might lose some weight for a while, but then you put it back on and some. Your body is just way too smart for these ordinary diets to ever work - you can’t fool a metabolic and hormonal system that’s the result of thousands of years of evolution. You have to work with your metabolism, not against it! I am not a doctor. These are my personal findings through research and experience. http://www.ebookxtra.com/raw_secrets.html http://www.ebookxtra.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Beth_Hansel http://EzineArticles.com/?Lose-Weight-Gain-Optimal-Health-By-Limiting-Cooked-Foods&id=411690 cheap zoloft order generic zoloft zoloft without prescription buy zoloft online

Self-Control Equals Guaranteed Weight Loss

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By I. Robertson How does one best lose weight? Well, there are many different things that I can say but none as important as this: Self-control. And by control, I mean, willpower. One has to view the unhealthier things as discomforting and consciously tell yourself that the healthier choices will yield happiness. Working on your willpower is no different than working a muscle. Maybe it would be helpful to purposefully choose the healthy things that seem so unappealing at first as an act to develop willpower as if lifting a dumbbell. Eventually, you will be making healthier decisions more often than not, which is the ultimate goal, to tip the scales in the right direction. On a further note, dont bite off more than you can chew; take baby steps toward your healthier goals. If you dive in altogether, then most likely youll be overwhelmed. Start slow and set goals that are a bit challenging but obtainable. Underneath this canopy of Self-control sits vital concept if weight loss is the goal: portion control. Eat more meals, but eat smaller portions. Ideally, you want to eat more than the typical 3 square meals a day. In at all possible, aim for 5 meals. The reason being that your body becomes hungry during the lulls between meals while on the traditional 3 meal plan. You might be saying, Well, I was always told to only eat when hungry. Well, its now been discovered that your body panics when hungry, not knowing when its next meal will be, and slows down its metabolism and hoards fat in order to conserve valuable energy. Think of your body as a furnace and the meals as adding coal to the fire. The greater the fire, the more calories burned. Next, Ill give you some useful tips on figuring out adequate portion sizes for different foods. For fruits and vegetables, one serving equals one cup. The American Diabetes Association says that 1/2 cup looks like a halved tennis ball sitting on your plate. So at each meal, imagine a full tennis balls worth of colorful vegetables, fruit, or starchier vegetables sitting on your plate. For lean meats, 3 ounces equal a single serving. In the case that you dont feel like measuring, just imagine putting a piece of chicken or fish on your plate thats the size of a deck of cards. Now, when dining out, large portions seem almost mandatory. The best way to fix that is to have the server immediately box up half of the meal and have you take the rest home for lunch the next day. Or, you could always just split an entree with someone and, if you havent indulged in awhile, then split a dessert with someone. Also beneath this umbrella of self-control and even beneath the canopy of portion control, lies another important tenet of healthy weight loss: insulin control. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas thats main role is to regulate carbohydrate metabolism. Essentially, when blood sugar levels start getting past a certain threshold, insulin is released to drag off the excess glucose to the liver, muscles, or to fat stores. Unfortunately, when you have a lot of simple, refined sugars like sodas or sweets, then the bloodstream is hit with too much glucose from the breakdown of simple carbs and, as a result, insulin is released in large quantities to get rid of the excess and return the bloodstream to normal blood sugar levels. However, too much can be released and the excessive insulin can rid your blood of most of its glucose rather quickly. This is why one feels exhausted and cloudy not too long after making a meal made out of sugary stuff. So, ideally, one wants to eat complex carbohydrates like colorful vegetables, grains, and starches. The reason being that complex carbohydrates have what is called a low glycemic index score. The glycemic index is a means to rate how quickly a carbohydrate hits the bloodstream, Table sugar has a score of 100, while a golden delicious apple rates as a 39. Typically, any carbohydrate that has a glycemic index score less than 55 is usually considered to be a good carbohydrate source since the raise in blood sugar is gradual and thus insulin isnt over-released (an exception would be carrots, with a score of 92). Now, if one spends a long time eating a lot of refined sugary foods, then one would not only become obese but would most likely develop a resistance to insulin that would eventually lead to diabetes. Essentially, your body finds itself unable to use the insulin that is already in the bloodstream and yet the pancreas still produces more and more. Many researchers believe that any carbs ingested would immediately be taken to be stored as fat since both the liver and muscles dont need to be replenished of energy. So, in order to avoid these maladies, control the amount of carbs ingested. Aim for no refined and processed carbs like white bread and sodas, even if that means eliminating one soda at a time. By replacing your potato chips and french fries and Wonder Bread with broccoli, apples, asparagus, and bell peppers, then things like Alzheimers disease, strokes, arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes can all be sidestepped. As the noted English author and critic, Samuel Johnson once said, Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance. So, persevere, for trimmer waistlines and longer lives await thee. My name is Ian Robertson, I’m 21 and am a Certified Personal Trainer working on my Master Trainer credits in Nashville, TN. Magnetic Weight Loss — Does It Work?

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

By Michael Smith, MD Magnetic weight loss is the newest fad diet supplement to hit the net. What is it and how does it work. Oh, and of course, does it work? Magnetic Weight Loss–What is it and How does it work? Magnets are believed to carry an inherent ability to hypnotize, in a sense, or even physically change our cellular physiology, even causing us to lose weight. At a cellular level it’s argued that bio-magnetism works by increasing cellular respiration, which is the process of breaking down macronutrients, like carbohydrates and fat, into useable forms of energy. The greater the rate of cellular respiration the greater the rate of calorie consumption. Caloric consumption results in a negative energy balance and weight loss. Here is a quick summary of how bio-magnetism is proposed to work: Magnet appliedStimulation of cellular respirationsCalories in the form of carbohydrates and fat are burned Negative energy balance occurs Weight loss Supporters of magnetic weight loss also claim that bio-magnetism results in a reactivation of body function and metabolism. I am not clear of the scientific meaning behind this claim. Some also claim that bio-magnetism allows your body to transform the food you absorb into a powerful combustion that burns away the excess fat permanently. This reduction of your fat cells all over your body will continue even at nighttimes when you are fast asleep. Bio-magnetism has already been used by people throughout the world. Unfortunately, many of the websites that make this claim state that they cannot release the names of people who have tried this new weight loss method. I have no idea why they can’t release the names. There is no evidence in support of the last claims listed. However, one study did study the cellular response to bio-magnetism. Magnetic Weight Loss — Does it Work? This is the abstract from the study conducted by the Department of Community Health at the University of Oregon. It was published by the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol 13, Issue 3 243-250, Copyright 1994 by American College of Nutrition The use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor cellular bioenergetics during weight loss may provide novel insights regarding metabolic functioning. METHODS: Changes were noted in 18 sedentary, moderately overweight women following a 7-week program consisting of a low-fat, 422-428 MJ/day (1010-1025 kcal/day) diet, a progressive walking program, a vitamin-mineral-fortified, isolated-protein meal supplement drink and a weekly group meeting. Mitochondrial energy production and utilization were assessed by measuring the concentrations of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and phosphocreatine (PCr) through magnetic resonance spectroscopy. CONCLUSIONS: Only mild changes in cellular respiration were noted. The best weight loss plan does not have to include bio-magnetism. The possible metabolic advantages associated with a program that employs moderate energy restriction (reduced caloric intake) and a regular aerobic exercise program produces by far the best results. If you haven’t already guessed, I agree with the final conclusion. As a matter of fact, the conclusion made by the author follows the rules of healthy weight loss. There is no magic to it, just simple calorie restriction with exercise. No surprise here. To Healthy Living! Michael A. Weight Loss Method The Scientific Way

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Jed Baguio When the body can burn off more calories in a day than it consumes, that is when weight loss occurs. There are two factors that affect this. First is how much a person consumes in a day and second is how active the metabolism is at breaking down and burning off calories. One must first understand how the metabolism works for better understanding on how this occurs. The metabolism breaks down food and nutrients to be used by the body. It is working and burning off fat whether you are not eating, whether you are exercising, sleeping or even being lazy. This is to keep the body running. A more active metabolism will result in more fat being burned throughout the day in order to keep the body running smoothly which will result in healthy weight loss in the long run. Herbs or fat loss pills are the key to burning fat and that is what many people believe. But it is not the truth. The result is only minimal and can be damaging to the body when abused. Studies have proven that there is really only one way to lose weight in a healthy way and it involves the lengthy experience of having to pay attention to your diet, drink more water and exercise daily in order to both burn off calories that way and to keep the heart pumping that results in both a boosted metabolism and healthier blood levels. To clearly show why boosting the metabolism is such a proven weight loss method if we combine these factors. Therefore, boosting your metabolism will result in both a better looking as well as a healthier body. Now the challenge is how to boost metabolism? One of the key factors in maintaining a healthy metabolism rate is nutrition. If you arent eating right, you arent going to see results even if you do exercise. Eating right is not just watching your calories. For keeping the metabolism working at a high level, certain foods are known for it. Complex carbohydrates and fiber are known for keeping insulin levels low after eating. One major role in boosting the metabolism and being able to burn of calories and undesired fat is exercise. It will help to maximize a boosted metabolism. Should you take diet supplements? If dieting and eating the right metabolism boosting foods wont work for you, and then there are plenty of healthy metabolism boosting supplements that can be sought out. Just pay close attention when looking for supplements. It is helpful to find certain supplements which help to boost the metabolism and increase the amount of calories burned each day naturally than going into those quick fixes supplements. A few supplements can be very effective such as Xerisan ASA diet pill. It is one of the most effective and natural metabolism boosting pills though it looks expensive. For my conclusion, you better to do your homework before you decide to buy any pills. For Successful Weight Loss, Become A Patient Person

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Wendy Hearn What does it feel like when your weight isn’t reducing as quickly as you would like? I imagine it feels frustrating. I bet you even experience a sense of failure on your part. Most of us want to lose weight quickly, perhaps by tomorrow, even though we know that realistically this won’t happen. Because we want the weight loss to happen much more quickly than it’s going to, we put undue pressure on ourselves. We want to achieve more in a shorter space of time. This is because your expectations are too high and generally not achievable. When these expectations aren’t reached, you feel disappointed. I’ve found that the inability to handle this disappointment is one of the things which throws people off track. They lose sight of the goal they’re looking to achieve. Setting these high expectations and then not reaching them, is like setting yourself up for failure. Setting your target at a lower, yet achievable level allows for a successful weight loss. Part of setting lower expectations is for you to develop your patience. You’ll then appreciate weight loss won’t happen overnight and you need to embark on a longer process. We all want to see speedy results and there are so many companies promoting quick fixes for weight loss that it’s all too easy to feel that it can happen quickly. Healthy weight loss will take some time. The habits which caused you to gain weight, which you’ve built up over the years, will take some time to change. To ensure these changes happen permanently requires patience on your part. Generally we as human beings don’t make changes easily or quickly. By developing your patience you can take some of the pressure off and this allows you to see that changes do happen over time. Steady, slower progress tends to achieve results in the long term. I encourage you to determine for yourself what having patience means for you. It may be that you set yourself a goal to handle just one habit at a time. Perhaps it’s discarding one habit which causes weight gain and replacing it with a healthier habit which promotes weight loss. It may be useful to consider which aspect of losing weight causes you most pressure and then see what having patience with this will mean. What reminders can you create for yourself to be patient? Perhaps it’s a sticker on your kitchen wall or your bathroom mirror. Have the patience to take your weight loss one day at a time. We live in an age where we expect most things to happen much more quickly than they did before. Although many things do happen instantly, for instance, communications, the same cannot be said for weight loss. Weight loss is achievable when you are patient and work at a more natural pace. The cycle of spring, summer, autumn and winter still take a complete year! Weight loss is similar. I suggest one of the first steps is to accept that weight loss will take some time. Then, I encourage you to set some realistic goals and time scales for yourself. Most things in life which are worth having take time. Feeling healthy and fit is worth the commitment but you must be patient along the way. What I want for you is to be patient and take steady, measured steps towards your weight loss. Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By James Ross If your lawn or parts of it are not growing well it can really be a drag and an eye sore either for the view of your house or the rest of your garden. If you are affected by having a poor lawn don’t despair, as it is very easy to remedy and the tips below are simple enough to implement and will make a definite change to how your garden looks. First of all it is important to make sure that you mow your lawn regularly from spring to autumn. Keep the height of the grass and weeds in the lawn to no more than 2 inches during the spring. Once you have done this rake any cuttings as well as dead grass away. At this stage the lawn will look somewhat messy, but you will find that the appearance will improve considerably within two weeks. In the months that follow right through to late autumn, make sure that you never cut the grass to more than two thirds of the height it was beforehand. If the grass it cut too short this will harm the grass and allow more weeds and moss to grow. To effectively revive the lawn spread a good fertilizer that also contains weed killer. This will encourage the grass to grow. Later in the autumn you should then add some lawn feed which should take care of any problems that may be left over. You should then also apply moss killer if there are any patches of it on your lawn. Make sure you don’t rake it till it turns brown at which point it will be very easy to take out with a rake. Dead brown moss makes bad compost, so just throw it out. If after one moss removal treatment there is any moss left over just repeat the treatment one more time. Should you have any bare patches on the lawn, lightly make indents in the soil after it has rained and remove any weeds. Then sprinkle the grass seeds and gently rake. Do not water the area till the seeds have germinated. If your garden goes through any dry spells water the lawn regularly. However do make sure that you water well because if you use water sprinklers that don’t eject efficiently, this may only have the effect of dampening the lawn making the roots grow upwards drying them out. So make sure you wet the soil well so that this wont happen. By following those simple procedures you will find a huge improvement in your lawn and by the following spring you should have a garden that looks more green and weed free. A poor lawn also attracts pests and disease which will also mean that the rest of your garden that isn’t affected will further improve. And since you will use less chemicals to control weeds and pests that will also be good for your own well being.
