Religion - The Enemy Of Society

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Charles Sabillon Religions saw their apparition almost since the very beginning of humanity, with the birth of the Homo sapiens specie about 100,000 years ago. All over the world where hominids eventually gave way to human beings, the new specie, which had a more evolved brain, began to ponder over the origin of things. Our ancestors had by far the most developed brain that any specie had ever possessed on this planet, but it was still an extremely primitive, brutish and incoherent cerebral mass. In their ignorance and total incapacity to comprehend complex phenomena, the men and women of the Paleolithic period gave simple responses to their questions. Since they could not even think for a second of the intricate scientific explanations that elucidated the numerous events that surrounded their life, they got into the habit of remitting everything to God. Whenever they came across an abundance of food, they thought it was God who had placed it there. When they would not find any and would starve, it was also God who had so wished it. If it rained, it was the Almighty and if it did not and they died of thirst, it was also Him. Since God was perfect, they could not question His decisions. With such an approach, they had a satisfactory answer for everything and their limited curiosity became satisfied. Unfortunately, that led to nothing. With such a vision of the world, there is nothing that humans can do to alter the course of events, so the inevitable result is passivity, and that is what our ancestors did. That is precisely the reason why it took so long for humanity to break loose from the shackles of poverty. By now in the twenty-first century, we know that passivity is the worse attitude that an individual or society can adopt, because the entire progress of humanity is due to science and technology, and those two require a huge amount of effort, perseverance, and hard work. The religions that prevailed in every corner of the world during the Paleolithic period, which went from 100,000 years ago to the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago, are now forgotten. Those of the Neolithic period, which came after the Paleolithic, have also been lost in the unrecorded darkness of antiquity. We will never get to know the names of those Gods, least to say more detailed information about their ceremonies, because none of those people had yet invented writing. The scant information we get, will come exclusively from the findings of anthropologists. However, there are numerous things that can be inferred from what anthropologists have uncovered. What is certain is that the first religions were terribly incompetent for explaining things and despite the huge amount of time that has elapsed since then, those of the present are just as inept. More important still is that those of the past conspired massively against progress and those of the present do it just as much. For both, there is nothing needing an explanation. For them, everything that needs to be known is magically revealed by the Almighty to the chosen ones or found in some holy book. Since nothing needs and explanation, there is thus nothing needing changed. Such a vision has a terribly deleterious effect on society because it hinders science. At present, we incessantly hear the Vatican and other Christian organizations arguing against stem cell research and other technologies. They vigorously oppose genetic engineering, which offers the best hope to millions of disease sufferers. Genetic engineering is a new field and it has attracted much controversy, even among unreligous groups. However, religions have a track record of always opposing all forms discoveries, all types of technologies, and all kinds of inventions. It is within their nature to conspire against progress. Christianity is the religion with the largest following in the world but it is not the one with the most animosity towards science. Islam is just as brutish and radical in its condemnation of wisdom, and Hinduism and Buddhism are not much better. All religions of the world have systemically opposed science, for science ends up by debunking the ludicrous explanations that they offer. Since science and technology are the only providers of welfare to humanity, it is beyond any doubt that religion has been the worst enemy of society. Charles Sabillon did High School in Texas and has undergraduate degrees in Philosophy, Economics and Law as well as a masters and a doctorate in International Relations. After the PhD, he undertook post-doctoral research in the fields of History, Economics, and Ecology. He has taught Economic History at a university in Switzerland and speaks fluently English, Spanish, French and German. How to get the Max from your Caterer

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By Ellen Zucker Caterers have a tough job. They must producetasty and tastefully presented dishes to largegroups. Sometimes very large groups. The dishes have to be ready at the same time. And if the program runs early or late, the catererhas to be able to modify his preparation so thefood can be served when the guests are ready. Off premises caterers have an additional hurdle. They must do all of this on-site, where there maylimited or no kitchen facilities available. So they must bring it all of their tools-sometimesincluding the oven-and make certain the foodstays at appropriate temperatures until ready. Despite their challenges, they want toplease you. Fortunately chefs are well trained to handlemany contingencies. And as creative peoplethey can stretch to meet your needs and desires. The key to getting the max from your catereris communication. They will want to know yourrequirements early on. So be sure to voice yourexpectations and concerns. And expect your caterer to offer alternatives ifyour expectations are difficult to carry off. Here is one example. Perhaps you want yourguests to have a choice of desserts-an optionbecoming more common. A good caterer maypoint out that you will pay much less if the guestmakes their choice at the time they return theirRSVP rather than choosing at the event. If you can, it is well worth your time, or the timeof your event planner, to meet with the chef. The chef will have a better understanding of yourwants and needs and be able to meet yourrequirements more effectively. Another key is respect. Chefs take justifiablepride in their creativity with food. Give the chefleeway within your general requirements and watchhim (or her) fly. Mother In-Law or Second Mom - Which Will You Be?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

By Gayle Ashbach The most maligned relationship in our culture does not have to be one of adversity! I raised two daughters of my own and helped to raise my stepson. Both of my daughters married nice young men. My stepson got married last summer and Im finding that a mother/daughter-in-law situation is completely different. There are so many articles written about the difficulties that young women have with their mothers-in-law. I cannot understand it. After all, we are the ones who raised our sons.So it makes sense that we taught them a lot about women by example and in every life experience. Therefore, we must have had a lot of influence on his choice. So why is it that many of us find faults with our new daughters? I believe that a large part of the problem is caused by pure old-fashioned jealousy. Mom does not want to share her sons adoration! She still wants to be the number one woman in her sons life. I believe that mom also wants to continue to be involved in her sons life decisions. This may be hard to swallow, but moms just have a hard time letting their sons go. Being a stepmom in-law, I thought I would have a chance to be one step removed and observe the situation. I should have known better. Just as I loved my little stepson when I first met him, I found that I love my new daughter-in-law. I have dropped the in-law and just call her my daughter. She is a fantastic young woman. She is thoughtful and kind and generous in the extreme. She loves my son. This was the key fact that influenced my feelings toward her, of course. Ive given a lot of thought to our relationship as the months have gone by, and there are several reasons why it works: 1. We treat each other as equals. 2. We are honest with each other when we disagree about trivial things, so that compromise can be achieved. We do not allow trivial differences of opinion to out weigh the importance of a good relationship. We laugh about this a lot. 3. If she shows interest in a particular recipe or family items I offer her copies of photos and recipes and other keepsakes that I can. 4. I dont give advice unless I am asked. 5. I dont tell anyone else the things she discusses with me. 6. I listen carefully when she needs to talk. 7.I have let her know that our home is her home now too and she is welcome to be comfortable there. 8. I let her know how happy I am to have her in our family. 9. I love the fact that she has a great sense of humor and has brought out the best in mine. 10. I encourage her to tell us what her feelings are about any given situation and how she would like thinks to work. I encourage all of you moms and step-moms who are about to have a new addition to your family, to read and think about the above. You can add a lot to your sons happiness by accepting and loving your new daughter, or you can cause a lot of adversity and in the process lose your son and possible even future grandchildren. Family life and relationships are what we make them. They do not just magically happen. There is no replacement for honesty and humor and the open arms of love and friendship. 5 Ways to Save $100 on Your Next Date While Having Way More Fun

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

By Naweko San-Joyz One of the most common complaints I hear about the dating scene- next to misleading on-line photos- is the ridiculous costs of going out. Here in San Diego, courting soires could come at $150-$200 an outing. But thats just because bachelors and bachelorettes lapse into mundane and expensive dating standbys instead of venturing into the offbeat and free venues located right in their own community. Not only are dating clichs like diner and a movie nauseatingly BOR-RING, they really dont give you a chance to get to know your date. Not to mention, if you dont ever want to see your date again, youre going to totally think that you wasted your cash on the typical dating miscellany. So, to skip these dating pitfalls and bank-breakers, take advantage of the cheap and exciting dating options available in your own neighborhood. 1. Go to a free, local hands-on class When was the last time you made a ceramic salad bowl or practiced jujitsu on your first date? Community centers and colleges often offer free classes to the public. Scan your local community papers in the Classes section and youre likely to find at least one or two offbeat, but hands-on classes that would make for a fun first date. Ive seen free classes on topics like meditation, modern California cooking, Polynesian dancing and Reiki. Pick a class and call it an edu-date. 2. Go to a local art or entertainment show If in 2007, you can say, Im not into art, Im afraid youve yet to realize how the art world has mushroomed into a sphere of all-encompassing creativity in the past decades. Nowadays, art does not mean purely paintings or sculptures. Art shows could involve a troupe using their body to re-interpret the migration of Monarchs. This week in San Diego, you can even handle human organs at the museum. Hows that for an art exhibition! If thats not your style, you can check out car shows, fashion shows, food tasting contests or wine tasting festivals. To find these cool diversions, go to your local art council and ask for a brochure of upcoming shows, or better yet scan the community bulletin in your local coffee shop for fliers about upcoming art shows. For more dating outlets, you can skim the Events section of your local newspaper or snatch a copy of the free community events newsletter that is typically located at the front of grocery stores. 3. Pack a dinner This is my favorite idea for saving money on a date because I think cooking food for another person is an act of love. Anyway, when you cook the meal for your date, and pack it along for your outing, you have an instant conversation piece. You get to explain why you chose the dish, how you prepared it and what other dishes you enjoy. The way you cook gives huge insight into your character, which makes it a fabulous way to animate an otherwise potentially vanilla date. And you save time and money by by-passing restaurant fare. 4. Play a game at the local park A good portion of your tax money goes to maintaining community parks. This is an awesome investment so why not take advantage of it. You can play one-on-one games like Frisbee, football, hacky-sack, volleyball, tennis or even catch at you local park. If you have a pet, why not bring along your fury-friend best. 5. Make it a mobile date Care to add a new dimension to your tryst? Turn your date into a mobile rendezvous by riding bikes, skating or hiking. Your local parks and recreation office most likely has brochures that list hiking paths and biking paths that you can enjoy with your date. In a nutshell, there are countless ways to save money on your next date, all you need to do is take a few minutes to find the activities that most intrigue you. Your local library, grocery stores, art council and local Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) all publicize free community events. Plus, you can find dating venues on-line at sites like backpage.com and craigslist.org. Even if you dont use these outlets for dating, they could be tantalizing occasions for finding new dates. Good luck Venus and Valentine. Time Wasters In The Office: How To Avoid Classic Time Management Killers

Monday, November 12th, 2007

By Carl Mueller There are many time wasters that contribute to poor time management and might lead you to wish you had more hours in the day to complete your work. The truth is that there are a few classic time wasters plus a few relatively new ones that help to sap your time and prevent you from having a productive day:1. Visits from your coworkers. Having coworkers popping into your office or to your cubicle to talk can be one of the worst time wasters because not only does it take up your time, you might be hesitant to ask them to leave so you can get some work done. If you have a door that you can close, do so. People should get the message that youre busy. Otherwise, try to find a quiet place such as a meeting room where you can be alone and left undisturbed. 2. Making and receiving phone calls Another classic time waster is making and receiving personal phone calls. If you have caller ID, you can use it to screen calls and let certain calls go to voice mail so that you can handle them later. If you find that phone calls are hurting your time management, try to block out time when you make and receive phone calls if this is possible, so that you are not simply answering the phone every time it rings. 3. Leaving your desk. Leaving your desk for one reason or another often leads you to get distracted especially if you run into people that start talking to you and steering you away from doing your work. Certainly if you are a smoker and run downstairs several times per day to have a smoke, youre probably wasting upwards of an hour per day or more when you consider the travel time, smoking time, talking time and then the time involved to remember what work you were doing when you left your desk each time you go for a smoke. 4. Email. One of the new classic time wasters, sending and receiving emails can certainly be a big time waster. Like receiving phone calls, responding to emails the moment they arrive can help to decrease your time management if you allow your email to rule you. As with your phone, you might decide to only send and respond to emails at certain times. 5. Internet. Like email, Internet usage (personal usage specifically) can be a big time waster. Actually, work-related Internet usage can be a big time waster too. Use common sense here. Wasting time using the Internet probably just means you have to end up staying late at work or bringing work home that you could otherwise do at home. Friendships Are Relationships Too

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

By Tony Tate Do you have a best friend? What kind of relationship is it? Is it your husband, wife, boyfriend? What about just a friend. Everyone needs one. I think it’s important that everyone have some one they can talk to, do things with, and just someone to hang out with. I was married once. That pretty much took up all of my time when I wasn’t working. Now all I do is work. I work with a bunch of great people, but the problem is outside of work I rarely see them. I do consider most of them my friends but not the type of friends I would confide in. If I had a need I suppose anyone of them would help out if they were able. I call this kind of casual. They care but I’m not at the top of their list. When I was in high school I had buddies. We did everything together. I never worried about what I was going to do on weekends because we all knew we were going to be together, doing whatever. Now that I have grown up my friends have their own families to take care of. Like when I was married, this takes up most of their time. I think everyone needs at least one on buddy. It is an important part of life. It is an important relationship to have. When you don’t have a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiance’, wife or husband you can hang with your buddy, or buddies. People you have thing in common with, who share the same ideas and outlooks. Friendship is an important part of life. It is an important part of your emotional health. You shouldn’t neglect it. Even if you get married you shouldn’t neglect those that you have spent so much time with, building relationships. Friends are hard to come by. Don’t give them so easily. Everyone is busy but, when you have the chance, make new friends. Get out and meet people. People don’t seem to value friendship much anymore. Or maybe when people figure out they can’t get anything from you or use you they have no more use for you. Don’t let this stop you. There are still people out there who know the ways of friendship. If you don’t you stand the chance of becoming isolated, lonely, and maybe even bitter. Don’t let this happen. Go out a make friends. Online Dating

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

By Kadence Buchanan With the dawn of the Internet and the popularity of online dating, the dating scene has never been so lively. Gone are the days when singles would worry about where to get a date on a Friday or Saturday night. These days, all it takes is a few hours online or less, depending on your personal preferences and, presto!, your dating woes are over. As a dating system, internet dating has paved the way for never-before-seen possibilities for single men and women. Individuals get the chance to meet online to explore the possibility of a romantic or sexual relationship in a free-wheeling and often unmoderated environment by simply using their personal computers, the Internet or cell phones. With today’s unprecedented access to the opposite sex, it’s “No More Lonely Nights” for everyone. It’s a simple system. Individuals list their personal information then look for others who fit their criteria in terms of age range, gender, location and other personal preferences. They may choose to upload their photos and look at the photos of others. Other supplementary services are also available to enhance online interaction, such as online chat, webcasts and message boards. Many of the dating websites offer free registration while others charge monthly dues. Websites often position themselves to cater to members’ specific interests, location, desired relationship and other criteria. Of all paid internet services, online dating or internet dating is by far the most popular, with Americans spending a whopping $469.5 million on it in 2004. As of last count (November 2004), there are as many as 844 lifestyle and dating sites, with the major players being Yahoo Personals, Match.com, American Singles, and eHarmony. All this dating activity online has spurred many to speculate what the dating scene will look like in the future. Some opine that in as little as 10 to 15 years from now, the Internet will be the primary source of love, romance and sex for people and whoever insists on looking for these things elsewhere will be viewed as a romantic relic of a forgotten age. Opinion is divided, however, on whether such a trend is a good thing or a bad thing. Keep Fishing When Your Fly Rod Breaks

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

By Steve Robbins Most anglers who fly fish on a regular basis eventually break a fly rod. I have broken fly rods more times than I’d like to admit. I suppose it will happen to all of us if we fish hard enough long enough. Go ahead and face the fact that your fly rod will eventually break at a very inopportune time. So, the question is what will you do when this happens? “Keep fishing” is the only acceptable answer. If convenience has provided, you brought a spare rod that you can easily get to. I never go fishing anymore unless a carry a spare rod. I know how I am. I will break a rod. I broke three rods in one week on a particular Colorado trip. Fly rods are expendable to me. I’ve stepped on them and sat on them. I’ve broken them trying to pull the sections apart. I’ve broken several tips buy trying to pull the fly line out of the tip top. I’ve broken them buy using them to break my fall. You name it and I’ve probably broken a fly rod while doing it. This is one reason why I buy rods with a good warranty. Lifetime warranties are great but not a necessity. All I need is a good no-nonsense warranty that will allow be to send my rod back with a $25 or $30 check for repairs. One summer, I was fly fishing from a boat on Lake Ferndale in East Texas. Somehow, the butt of my fly rod got wedged between my boat seat and the boat. The rod snapped right above the cork handle. There I was in the boat in the middle of the lake without a spare rod. I not only broke the rod but I broke my own number one rule. “Always carry a spare rod”. I was certainly disappointed but was not going to stop fishing. So, I took the real off of the seat, threw the butt section of the rod in the bottom of the boat and kept on fishing. I laid the reel at my feet and coiled up some line beside it. I held the broken rod by the base section. I could cast and strip just fine without ever needing my reel. I fished all day like that and caught plenty fish. On another summer day, while fishing deep in the San Juan National Forest in Colorado, I broke my rod tip. I had gotten my fly hung near the top of a small tree. I pulled my fly line and bent the tree over so that I could reach the fly. It was working just fine. Buy the time I pulled the tree over enough to reach the fly; I had gotten enough slack in my line so that the rod was now lying down flat on the rocks. Well, I stepped on it. The rod broke just bellow the tiptop. Obviously I did not carry a spare rod. It was a little too inconvenient to pack a spare rod into where I was. You know you just can’t cast a rod with the tip missing. So what was I to do? I broke the rest of the tip section off so that it was flush with the first snake guide. I bent and reshaped the snake guide as best as I could so that the tip would be as smooth for casting as I could possible get it. It was not the perfect fix but it worked well enough for me to finish the day fishing. I now recommend carrying and emergency rod repair kit with you wherever you fish. You can buy them or just assemble the supplies together in a plastic zip-lock. A good rod repair kit is a handy assortment of things needed to repair a broken rod in a crunch. The kit should include:- 1 Stripping Guide - 2 Snake Guides - 2 or 3 Tip Tops with different inside diameters- 1 Bobbin & 100 yd Spool of 6/0 Tying Thread - 1 Bottle cement (I prefer 5min epoxy) - Sharp knife or razor So… good luck on your next adventure… and keep on fishing no matter what. Coconut Oil , Weight Loss and Heart Health - An Unlikely Partnership

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

By Gene D. Millen Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap. Yes, I’ve read the negative publicity but the truth is that it can help you lose weight and is perfect for heart health. It should be your oil of choice for baking and frying. I can imagine what you are thinking. “Isn’t that a saturated fat?” As my 3 year old grand daughter would say, “Yep.” But did you know that saturated fat may keep you from having a heart attack or stroke? This probably sounds like heresy to most of my readers but your body needs saturated fat for heart health and to nourish your brain, nerves and hormones. Every cell membrane is ideally made up of 50% saturated fat including your brain. If you are deficient in saturated fat your energy drops and your hormones and metabolism head south. Saturated fat lowers two important heart attack risks, Lp(a) cholesterol and C Reactive Protein (CRP), a measure of inflammation. The campaign against coconut oil started four decades ago when researchers fed animals coconut oil that was altered to remove the essential fatty acids. For reasons that are unclear, the researchers destroyed the excellent coconut oil by heating it to a high temperature and pumping hydrogen into it thus changing it to a highly toxic trans fat. In summary they ruined the coconut oil and then blamed the oil for the resulting negative health results. Go figure. According to Jane Heimlich, author of What Your Doctor Wont Tell You, the American Soybean Association jumped on the band wagon by advising their members to protest to public officials that coconut and palm oils were a threat to health and stealing U.S. soybean oil markets. Major food companies, sensitive to consumer fears replaced the healthy tropical oils with toxic trans fat laden hydrogenated vegetable oils. This is a perfect example of how great lobbying and advertising can mold public opinion. The ironic and sad thing about the 40-year negative campaign against coconut oil is the amazing health benefits that are being missed. Coconut oil has been found to aid the body in destroying dozens of harmful viruses, supports the immune system, improves chronic fatigue, boosts energy and will even help you lose excess body fat. Dr. Mary G. Enig, one of the worlds leading biochemists and a pioneer in research on fats and oils explains: “The fact is that for the last four decades, saturated fats, including coconut oil, have been condemned for the misdeeds of polyunsaturated fats, trans fats, and refined carbohydrates. The diet police have arrested the wrong suspect. Dr. Enig is also coauthor of a new eye opening book titled “Eat Fat Lose Fat” which discusses in depth the research on fats and oils and many of the erroneous conclusions that we take for granted as the truth. Jon J. Kabara, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Michigan State University says, Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of the Lauric oils in coconuts. These fats are similar to fats in mothers milk and have similar nutriceutical effects. Nutritional expert, Dr. Joseph Mercola says, “For those with diabetes, its almost a sin that coconut oil has been kept hidden from them. It helps regulate blood sugar and raises the metabolic rate causing the body to burn more calories and thus promoting weight loss. A faster metabolic rate stimulates increased production of insulin and increases absorption of glucose into cells, thus helping both Type I and Type II diabetics.” If you going to try coconut oil there are some things to watch for. The quality can vary widely so be sure to look for organic virgin coconut oil made from fresh coconuts. Avoid the expeller pressed brands even though they are naturally cheaper. We use and recommend the Doctors A-Z Extra Virgin Coconut Oil which is certified organic. It is the highest quality coconut oil that you can buy and we love it on our cereal and use it in all baking recipes.
