Yellow Headed Spruce Sawfly

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Paul Burke Appearance: Yellowheaded spruce sawfly is a serious pest in our area and is found in most types of spruce. Early July is when the olive green larvae first appear and can be found on the branches of spruce. Generally speaking the larvae are similar to budworm in the fact they prefer new growth for feeding. Once the finish with this they have been known to move on to the older growth on the tree. One way of identifying this pest is to disturb them while on the branch. They will usually rise up both their head and tail and produce a liquid from their mouths. Life Cycle: Adults emerge in early to mid June and resemble a small wasp in appearance. These adults begin laying eggs in openings they create at the base of new growth needles. Unlike budworm these eggs are laid singularly. As the larvae emerge they immediately begin feeding on the edges of the new growth needles. As they feed and grow they will move on to feed on the entire needle. This process continues for about a month. At this time the larvae will fall to the ground to pupate and over-winter in the ground beneath the tree. Controlling sawfly: Weather, parasites, and predators generally will keep populations of sawfly under control. This pest tends to prefer small, young trees growing in the open and on its own. A tree growing for 3 to 4 years in your front yard is ideal for this pest to take advantage of. They begin by eating single branches but can move on to spread to the entire tree. If defoliation occurs repeatedly the tree may be killed. In the event you are required to use an insecticide ensure you follow all label directions carefully. These insecticides should be applied once the sawfly larvae begin to feed. Generally this will occur about 10 days after new growth sheds their bud caps. When your tree is young and small enough you can use cultural controls to combat this pest. By taking the time to handpick these larvae you will minimize the amount of insecticides used on your trees. Paul is a Certified Pesticide Applicator in Alberta,Canada. 7 Steps to Effective Communication

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Sheila Dicks The success of any business or organization depends largely on how effectively the members communicate. The ability to speak well is a minimum requirement of some businesses when hiring. Whatever the job, business professionals require extensive use of oral communication when carrying out their duties. Effective communication involves: Listening: Good listening skills and showing a genuine interest are attributes of a successful communicator. Sales associates who actively listen to customers inquires and complaints are more able to solve problems and gain customer loyalty. Use Names: When meeting people make sure you hear the persons name and use it right away so you will remember it. If you are not sure what the person said, ask him/her to repeat it. Get to the Point: Show value for peoples time by being as concise as possible when giving information. Do not give lengthy, unnecessary details and dont make excuses for your mistakes. Answer the question and give important information only. Let Others Talk: Dont be a person who does all the talking. What you are saying may be of interest to you only. Keep the other person in mind, giving him/her a chance to be a part of the conversation. Look for signals that you may be boring your listener and ask questions to involve them in the conversation. Non-verbal Language: Nine-five percent of our communication is non-verbal, which includes: eye movement, tone of voice, posture, facial expressions and hand gestures. When talking to someone keeping eye contact without staring shows a sense of confidence. Be aware of non-verbal communication and keep it consistent with your message. Vocal Cues: Do not use an excessive amount of filler words (sayings or words repeated often), sounds such as uh, um or use lengthy pauses during conversation. The listener will lose interest in what you are saying and will become bored. Create an Atmosphere of Openness: To establish a good relationship with customers and create a comfortable atmosphere be attentive to the number of interruptions. Give your customer/acquaintance your undivided attention by not keeping physical barriers (such as desks) between you. Avoid trying to communicate in a busy area and keep your focus on the listener. Home-made Safety Pin Jewellery

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By S. Roberts Make a beautiful bracelet from safety pins and beads. No one will know what it’s made of until they look really closely. To make the bracelet you will need… Roughly 85 silver safety pins of the same size, an assortment of small beads and some sheering elastic. Decorate each safety pin by opening each pin and slipping on some beads. Make sure there are enough beads to fill that side of the safety pin once the pin is closed again. Close the pin and use a pair of plies to squeeze the head of the safety pin to hold the pin firmly closed. Decorate each pin in this way, adding beads to pins in a random way. The pins are now threaded together. You will notice that there is a hole in the pinhead and another hole at the other end of the safety pin where the metal is turned, creating a circle. These are the holes used when threading up the pins. Two lines of elastic are used one at the top and one below with the pins threaded onto them like the rungs of a ladder. To begin, thread the top line through the head of the first pin and the bottom line and through the circle hole. With the second pin, thread the top line through the circle hole and the bottom line and through the head of the pin. Continue adding pins to the lines in this way alternating which way you add each pin. Make sure when you add the safety pins that all the beads are visible on the same side. When the last safety pin has been added tie the two ends of the top line together so that all the pins sit closely together. Then tie off the bottom line in a similar way. To make your bracelet look extra special, put it in an jewellery box or a metallic gift box on a bed of tinsel. S. Marketing Must Reflect Customer Needs

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Kevin P. Dervin Here is a small business marketing tip. When it comes to your marketing materials, what you like needs to take a back seat to what your clients and prospects need. I see small business owners all the time creating marketing messages and materials based on their preferences and what they like. It seems logical enough, but too often these same business owners are surprised when their materials and messages miss the mark. Consider that everyone is judging your message and your materials based on their criteria, not yours. Sometimes I describe it to my clients by saying think of your marketing as a wall. There are two sides to the wall. There is the side that you see and what is important to you. But, there is also the side the prospects or clients see and what is important to them. If your message and your materials are only designed to reflect your side of the wall, then don’t be surprised when they don’t work. It’s a common small business mistake. Design your marketing message and materials from the outside-in. Too often marketing materials are poorly put together because they have the wrong orientation and insufficient content. How many times have you come across someone else’s materials and been left wondering if what they offer is relevant for you? Short little three-word bullets that list out services or facts about how long you’ve been in business simply don’t communicate. What your prospects and clients need is to know that you understand their situation and what problems, issues and challenges they’re trying to solve. They need to know what outcomes and results you want to help them produce. What will things be like when their problems are solved? They need to understand your basic approach to help them solve their challenges. Great marketing materials inform and educate those who are in search of solutions. Yes, your marketing materials should reflect you and your business. But, don’t focus on that until you’ve addressed what your prospects and clients really need. When Attracting Sexy Women, Remember… Time And Circumstance Change Everything

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By John Alanis Many guys are just too intimidated and full of anxiety around sexy women to be successful at attracting women. I’ve even seen guys who turn women’s heads walking into a room who have this issue. Let me help some of you who may have this “between the ears” handicap. I have a good friend of mine who teaches people how to become millionaires by investing in real estate. He’s bought and sold over 1,500 houses in his real estate career. The guy is a real doer, not a talker (hes pretty good at attracting women, too) and one of the most successful guys I know. I asked him what he considered to be the most important key to being a successful Real Estate investor. He looked me right in the eye and said this: “Time and circumstance change everything.” How does this apply to attracting desirable and sexy women? See, in Real Estate investing you have to deal with a “motivated seller” so you can get the house at the right price and make a nice profit when you “cash out.” You have to deal with those who need to sell, not want to sell. What my friend told me was this: some of the best deals he ever put together came from dealing with people who told him no month after month after month and then they finally said yes (much like sexy women will). What happened? Time and circumstance changed. They went from wanting to sell, to needing to sell, and when they needed to sell he was still there. If he’d been like most real estate investors and forgotten about the deal as soon as he heard “no” he would never have been as successful as he is today. The same thing applies to attracting women. Here’s the truth about how people, including sexy women, think: No decision, however firm in the moment, is ever final. Ever. Decisions are always being made, and re-made based on time and circumstance. An unmotivated seller today may be very motivated tomorrow. The same thing applies when it comes to attracting women. I hear guy after guy say, “She rejected me, I have no chance with sexy women like her.” Or, “She left me for another guy. She’s gone forever.” All that’s malarkey just send all those women over to the King and eventually I’ll allow them to spend time with me, no matter what they say in the beginning. Why? Because time and circumstance change everything, whether youre selling real estate, or meeting intimidating, sexy women. A few years ago I had a truly amazing once in a lifetime experience with a woman, Christine R. (she’s one of my female testimonials at www.womenapproachyou.com/enter.htm) from Seattle. She saw an article about me, contacted me and we wound up meeting in Reno, sharing an experience that is really indescribable. It felt like we lived a lifetime together in three daysan amazing example of what can happen when you master the art of attracting women. However, due to distance and other factors we both knew a long term committed relationship was out of the question, although we continued to meet as “adventure partners.” But I knew she’d eventually meet a guy for a long term relationship because family was very important to her. And she did. And it was painful for me. HOWEVER I didn’t get mad or place her in the “ex’s” category or the “friends category” (like many men do when dumped by sexy women). Nope, instead I left our relationship open to endless possibilities, although at the time she assured me she had met “the one,” and that she and I would never be intimate again. (I, being the King, said it was not “the one,” simply the “next one.”) But time and circumstance change everything, especially when attracting women. And I did see her again in an intimate way. And she is in my life today, in a totally different way than I ever expected-in a way where we can both be truly happy for each other no matter if the other is in a relationship or not. That never would have happened had we become “just friends” or “ex’s.” And it rarely happens with men who date sexy women. What can you learn from this? No matter what a woman tells you at the time, all decisions are subject to change. I have been told three times in my life by women I cared deeply for that our time together was over. But it wasn’t. If I’d reacted like the typical guy and considered these sexy women “evil bitches” who were out to get me, our “future time” never ever would have happened. But I simply gave them my genuine understanding, told them how much our time together meant, and let them know I would be in their lives in whatever capacity they needed, without judgment, without ulterior motive, without ever saying, “I told you so.” And all three came back to me, and our relationships to this day are stronger than they ever were before. Why? Because I understand this when it comes to attracting women: time and circumstance change everything. Matchmaker Make Me a Match or Should I Say “Light Me on Fire”?

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Zannah Hackett Just when you thought you knew it all, there it is… another fail-safe sure-fire remedy to all of life’s foibles. Being single has got to be among the biggest let downs in history and the greatest opportunity for advice abuse. The funny thing is, we as human beings KNOW we are supposed to be with one another. Yet, we always manage to search, find and discard each other like perishable fruit, some of us more often than not. Why and how it is we know we are to be together is best explained by taking the time to explore the Knowledge of Y.O.U.. This information is actually so old it’s new again. Those that enjoy the exploration of man’s evolvement have traced it as far back as man’s early attempt at speaking but it’s safe to say it’s at least 3000 years old. I found the wisdom to be extremely useful in my own pursuit of love and eventually shared my discoveries with girlfriends that used it to find love. In fact, I recently wrote a book at the urgent request of clients and students who were getting writer’s cramp trying to take notes in my seminars. In class I cover many things but the most useful of all laws addressed in this understanding of the lost art of matchmaking is the Law of Attraction. This law is nothing like the popularized laws addressing what I call the “OOH Baby” factor. When you leave class you not only know first hand why he moves you and it what direction but WHAT he looks like! If you want someone that lights your fire…. I suggest you learn to find a good match. Don’t expect dating sites to do the work for you. Their job is to provide the meeting place. Yours is to show up and know what to do. Start by getting to know Y.O.U. to be continued… Zannah Hackett Zannah Hackett Rev,BAE,MA, relationship expert, inspirational speaker and author of The Ancient Wisdom of Matchmaking, teaches the Knowledge of Y.O.U., your own understanding, revealing the lost art of matchmaking. Why Target the “Matures”

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Bill Willard The “Matures” are the generations that came along between 1909 and 1945. Born to and tempered by economic uncertainty, older Matures were nurtured by the New Deal and served in the mightiest armed force fielded by any nation. The Matures’ core values are a roll call of traditional American culture: Honor; optimism, selflessness, dedication to a higher purpose (self-sacrifice equals virtue). Having made the World safe for democracy, the men and women whom we now refer to as the Matures attended college on the G.I. Bill, opened businesses, raised familiesand saw the Marshall Plan rebuild Europe from the ground up (many as participants!). Shared Experiences — Seeing is Believing As a result of these shared experiences, Matures tend to believe in the ability of institutions and people with expertise and the will to achieve to solve problems and get things done. Still, like other people, the Matures want options and need to know the long-term benefits of the things they buy and buy into. While they may have a soft spot for their own grandkids, at heart these people are unemotional pragmatists who distrust marketing hype, resist canned sales tactics and insist on doing business with trusted professionals with proven track records, not just anyone claiming to be an “expert.” Mature Market Segments The Matures tend to think and associate with people many years younger than themselves. With that in mind, it is worthwhile to understand the common characteristics associated with the various age-based market segments that make up this large generational cohort and be prepared to help prospects address age-specific subjects: Age 50 - 64: The 33 million pre-retirees between ages 50 to 64 control assets worth approximately $575 billion and have the highest disposable income of any age group. This age group has a self-image of a much younger generation, is concerned with appearance, fitness, nutrition and self-fulfillment. They are good prospects for exercise equipment, cosmetics, luxury cars, financial services, investment advice and travel. While there are more or less equal numbers of men and women in this age group, many are new grandparents and spend a lot of money on their grandchildren. Also among this group are members of the “Sandwich Generation.” That is, younger Matures and older Boomers who may still have children in college and are in the midst of planning for retirement, but who also find themselves having to provide a certain amount of financial support and make important decisions for their own parents. To keep themselves marketable some people in this situation are going back to school looking for additional income opportunities through adult education (in effect, using what they learn at school tonight on the job tomorrow). Age 65 - 74: The 17 million people in this market segment control assets worth approximately $195 billion. Largely, but not entirely, retired now, most have a great deal of free time; yet they are still very active and are concerned about diet and health, and are very sensitive about being excluded from society. They tend to choose lighter foods, use prescription medications, and buy services that help them accomplish daily chores. Because most women still outlive most men, there is an increase in the number of female-headed households in this group. Many have substantial sums of money in cash equivalents. They are good prospects for travel services, restaurants and leisure activities, as well as estate planning and, increasingly, long-term care products. Age 74 - 84: People in the 75-to-84 age group have been classified as the young old–though youll find that many women prefer of a certain age, especially if you dont want a hatbox in the face, cautions the New York Times. The 9 million people in this age bracket represent assets worth close to $100 billion. Concerned with the possibility of serious illness, their priority is health care and maintaining their independence despite greater difficulty with routine tasks. There are many more women than men in this group; they spend 25% of their incomes on health services, and tend to invest heavily in cash equivalents, saving their money instead of spending it. Over 85: People over 85 are now the fastest-growing segment of the Mature market in percentage of growth. According to the New York Times, The number of Americans who are 85 or older is rising rapidly: The total jumped 51 percent from 1980 to 1996, and is expected to climb an additional 32 percent by 2005. Genontologists, not to mention marketers, already call this age group the oldest oldan unfortunate moniker that sounds only slightly better than prime of geezerdom. Thirty years ago, many in this market segment were among those who moved into first-generation retirement communities in Florida, Arizona and other Sun-Belt states, attracted by the offer of an “active retirement lifestyle,” replete with year-round golf, swimming pools, bridge at the clubhouse. More recently, these establishments have been busily reinventing themselves to accommodate the growing number of now-elderly retirees, doing everything from making home health care available to installing elevators in no-longer accessible two-story buildings, and turning up the lights in the bingo hall. Many offer services to residents who are taking the next inevitable steps to full-time nursing home care. Many older Matures are caring for friends and family on their own through programs in churches and temples. “Forty million Americans are 60 and older. ‘Senior Companion’ programs, and others like it, both formal and informal, were formed to improve the lives of the elderlyThe relationships they foster may even allow seniors to stay in their own homes longer, which is better for them and less expensive for everybodySeniors who help others get as much out of it as those they help.” (Source: “Companions in Caring,” by Karen Long, Tampa Tribune). The adult children of Matures may understand their parents’ need for financial security planning, but may be reluctant to urge action for fear of coming across as a bit too eager about their own inheritances, suggests Elaine Floyd, CFP of Bellingham, Washington, author of J.K. Lasser’s Investor’s Tax Guide. It might help to have friends their parents age who have already done their own planning bring the subject up and help them see the light. If it works, why not? The Future is Online Degrees

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Ryan Fyfe With the wide range of opportunity available to obtain an online degree, it almost doesn’t make sense to go to a university or college. Of course online courses will never be able to match the full immersion that an actual insitution can offer, but for someone who is working, or tied down with other commitments, it can open doors that where closed before. Whether you need to upgrade your education for a promotion at work, or to even just get the job that you want, an online education might be right for you. It’s generally more affordable and most importantly flexible then a competing course at a university or college. Online universities are striving constantly to become more reputable, and to offer courses in competitive fields. Keeping that in mind, the entrance requirements are typically the same for both online & offline. A typical online degree can be completed in about 3 years, but of course that varies on how much commitment you give to the course, and also if you have any previous credits that are applicable. One of the most important things to do when considering out on the path of an online education is to do your research! Research both the history of the school, as well as the current reputation, and if the degree you will obtain will be recognized for what it is you need down the road. There has been instances in the past where some online institutions have basically just been selling degrees, which can lead to several problems such as: Loss of jobs, and involvement with authorities. Keep a level head on your shoulders, do your homework, and you will make out just fine! Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the article, this caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks. Why It’s Best to Live Alone

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By E. Raymond Rock Its best to live alone if we are of a spiritual nature. The Reality that we have experienced, which few have, changes us, and because of this change toward something quite ineffable, it is difficult to continue with the pretenses required in shallow relationships. Things have to be real, and when they are real, they do not always live up to the expectations of those who do not have spiritual tendencies. Sometimes, spiritual people just need time alone, and not everybody understands this, especially those caught up in the carousel of the world. If a relationship is launched solely by hormones (and hormones are not to be taken lightly), the high of the love affair calms down much faster for the spiritual person, and the other will not understand. He or she will see it as a rejection, while it is not a rejection at all, only a return to the base of the spiritual person, the base that can never be dismissed once that turn is made away from the world. Its rare to find a partner with compatible spiritual tendencies. The reason for this is because many people seem spiritual on the exterior, but underneath, they are still immature in this area. While the true spiritual person will naturally tend toward solitude and silence, those not yet advanced to that level will become quickly bored after the playacting is over. This causes discontent for both parties, and it can be irreconcilable. Living alone, of course, has its drawbacks. If the spiritual person is not yet grounded in their understanding, there can be a feeling of incompleteness and a longing to make oneself complete with the help of another. This could lead to a search for a soul mate, and the karma for searching is to find. Whats found, however, can be influenced by sexual drives, which are naturally blinding. By the time we wake up, sometimes a long term commitment is made, and then we have to hope that we change together, because it is true that everything in existence changes constantly. The spiritual person understands that everything changes, while most others believe that things will remain the same forever. The spiritual person also knows intuitively that happiness is never constant, and that life can be expected to be discontenting many times. Also, the spiritual person knows that his or her small self is not important, because they have felt or experienced something so much greater, and because of that understanding, they express an unconditional love toward all beings, which can be misunderstood by those who are not spiritual, and jealousy can result. So, a few things to ponder, and yes . . . its still best to live alone if you have spiritual tendencies. Having said that, however, if you do choose a mate, be prepared to give each other wide parameters, because the thing that is guiding the spiritual person always supersedes worldly relationships. Thats just how it is, and if the two people are mature enough to handle this, then the relationship could be a life of helping each other find truth, and picking each other up when she or he falls down, and thats a beautiful thing. . . . But it is rare. E.
